Fall 2024 Network Meeting

Fall Network Meeting 2024

Wednesday November 20th, 2024

10:00-12:00

Via Zoom

Our Fall Network meeting in 2024 was attended by 13 participants. A major windstorm shook Vancouver Island the night before, and many areas on the east coast were still feeling the effects and experiencing power outages that morning.

We discussed new stations installed in 2024, recent updates to the shared drive and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), and a summary of statistics from discharge measurements collected over the past year, as well as a comparison to site visits from 2023.

We also touched on equipment sharing plans, monitoring schedules, safe practices for monitoring in high flow, and plans to host another Flow Regatta in 2025.

Provincial hydrometric specialist Jon Jeffery gave an update on Flo-Mo Network data publication progress, shared some examples of rating curve shifts and how changes to control features can influence these shifts.

Jon also shared some examples of how transect site selection can influence shifts and compared two different transect sites utilized at Wilfred Creek under different flows.

A few takeaways from Jon to keep improving data collection in 2025:

  • Consistency in control photos is important
    • try to include the staff gauge and logger housing for perspective if possible
    • make sure to include all of the downstream features of your site (i.e., include both banks and zoom out as much as possible) .
    • try to take photos from the same locations and angles each time
  • When scheduling stage-discharge visits, frequency and variety is key
    • aim to plan measurements every 4-6 weeks and at different stages (low, medium, & high flows)
  • Keep taking excellent notes! The improvement in detailed note taking and completed data sheets during field visits over the last year has helped with the ease and speed of data review. Keep up the good work!

Many thanks to everyone who took the time to attend this meeting, and apologies to anyone who was not able to attend because of connection issues related to the wind storm. If anyone has questions related to the meeting, please feel free to reach out to me at abadger@bccf.com.
